Type "singles near me" into an app store and you get apps that measure distance from your phone and nothing else. That works in a city. In the South West it means a match list full of holidaymakers in August, people on the far side of the Severn, or someone who looks close on a map but sits beyond a moor with no straight road between you. • In a rural area, go wider. If you live near Holsworthy or Launceston, a radius that takes in Bude, Okehampton and Tavistock is sensible.
• Remember the summer. Roads in Cornwall and along the Devon coast slow right down in the holidays, so someone who is half an hour away in March can be an hour away in August.
• Ask yourself one question: would I drive there on a Tuesday? If the answer is no, the radius is too big.
