The harbourside and Wapping Wharf are central, busy and easy to reach, which makes them good for a first meeting. Clifton and Whiteladies Road suit a quieter drink or coffee. Gloucester Road and Stokes Croft are livelier. Pick somewhere public that you both know how to get to, and leave the adventurous choices for the second date.
Once you have the first coffee behind you, the city has plenty of open space for a longer walk. Brandon Hill has Cabot Tower and one of the best views over the docks. The Downs run up to the edge of the Avon Gorge, with the Suspension Bridge in view. Across the river, the Ashton Court estate and Leigh Woods are big enough to forget you are in a city, and in the north, Snuff Mills follows the Frome through a wooded valley. Bristol dates by area as much as by distance. The river splits the south, Bedminster, Southville, Totterdown and Knowle, from the centre. Bishopston, Horfield and Henleaze stretch north up the Gloucester Road and A38. Easton, St George and Fishponds sit east, Kingswood and Hanham beyond them. Clifton and Redland look west to the Downs.
