Westcountry Singles vs Match: Local Dating Compared

Both are proper dating sites for people who want a relationship rather than a game. The difference is reach: Match covers the whole of the UK, and Westcountry Singles is built for the South West alone.

The short answer: Match suits you if you want one of the longest-running dating sites in the world and a national pool of people. Westcountry Singles suits you if you live in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset or around Bristol and want to meet people from your own part of the region.

Two serious dating sites, with different maps

Match has been around since 1995, which makes it one of the oldest names in online dating. It is owned by Match Group, the company behind Tinder and Hinge too, and the UK site has the polish you would expect from that: a phone app as well as the website, a familiar layout and a big national membership to search.

Westcountry Singles is a much smaller, regional site, and that is the point of it. Everyone on it lives in the South West. When you search for people near Exeter, you are not wading through profiles from Reading and Swindon to find them. The towns with the most members are Plymouth and Exeter, followed by Bristol, Truro, Taunton and Barnstaple, and you can see each area on our locations page.

Profiles you can actually read

The good news is that neither site is a swipe app. Match is built around written profiles: you describe yourself, say what you are looking for, and browse or search people who sound right. It also suggests matches based on what you have told it and who you look at.

Westcountry Singles works the same way at heart. You write a full profile, add photos and get daily match suggestions filtered by the things that matter day to day: age, distance, the kind of relationship you want, whether someone drinks or smokes, and shared interests. On top of that there are status updates, polls and comments, so you can get a feel for someone before you write to them. The features page has the full list.

Local search that respects the distances down here

The South West is long. From Bristol to Penzance is close to two hundred miles, and in Cornwall or North Devon the nearest decent-sized town can be forty minutes away. A national dating site handles this with a distance slider, which works, but it treats the whole country the same.

On Westcountry Singles every member chooses their own town, and VIP members can search by city and distance. Someone in Saltash can look at Plymouth and the Tamar Valley without seeing all of Cornwall; someone in Bridgwater can include Taunton and the Quantocks. It makes a first date that is an easy drive much more likely. If you live on a farm or out on the moors, our page on country dating explains how members in rural areas tend to set their search.

Safety handled by people as well as software

Match offers photo verification: you record a short video selfie, it is checked against your profile photos, and verified members get a badge. That is a sound system and it is open to all members.

Westcountry Singles offers free ID checks with a badge, plus video verification with one of our moderators that needs no documents at all. Your real name and email are never shown, your location only ever appears as your nearest town, and if someone tries to move you onto WhatsApp or another app too early, the site warns you. Human moderators work alongside automatic behaviour checks. All of it is on our safety page.

When Match might suit you better

If you live outside the South West, Match is the obvious choice: we only cover this region. The same goes if you are happy to travel to meet someone and want the largest possible pool of people across the country, or if you would rather use a dedicated phone app from an app store. Westcountry Singles works in any browser and can be saved to your phone's home screen, but it is not in the app stores.

Age matters too. Match is aimed at adults of every age, so if you are in your twenties it will give you more people your own age. Our members are mostly in their late thirties, forties and fifties, and younger singles are fewer on our site.

And if you are over 40 and would rather meet people at a similar stage of life, our sister site Mature Westcountry Singles is worth a look alongside both.

Match and Westcountry Singles: your questions

Is Westcountry Singles part of Match?

No. Match is owned by Match Group. Westcountry Singles is an independent regional dating site that runs on the HubPeople platform and has no connection to Match.

Can I use Match and Westcountry Singles at the same time?

Yes. Plenty of people keep a profile on a national site and a local one. Our membership covers only our site, and you can see exactly what it includes on the pricing page.

Which has more people near me in Devon or Cornwall?

Match has far more members nationally. Every Westcountry Singles member lives in the South West, and Devon is our biggest county, followed by Somerset and Cornwall, so local results are all we show.
